Many types of drugs can create harmful interactions when they are taken with alcohol. This includes over-the-counter and prescription medications as well as illegal or street drugs. Symptoms of interactions between alcohol and a medication can range from fatigue or dizziness to even coma, heart attack, or death. Many factors, including the user’s body chemistry, amount of time between ingestion of the two substances, how much medication is taken, and ingredients in the drug determine what the outcome will be.

Research from the Journal of Neuroscience shows that addicts’ brains may be able to repair the damage caused by alcoholism and alcohol abuse when they quit drinking. This study was performed at the Bowles Center for Alcohol Studies at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. It was the first of its kind to show that brain damage from drinking alcohol might be reversed through abstinence. Read the rest of this entry »

No one drug is better or worse than another. They all damage us physically. They can all lead to death. They can harm those who use them as well as impairing the user to the point that they can cause harm to those around them. They all lead us places we never imagined. Alcoholism has gone through many different stereotypes; however, the fact is that alcoholism is a dangerous disease. Much like any other chronic disease, alcoholism can last an entire lifetime, if treatment is not sought after.
