Community Groups – The Way to deal with Alcohol Abuse and Drug Abuse in Minnesota

May 21st, 2008 by jgold454

While most states of the nation are trying to address the problem of alcohol and drug abuse through various medical and nonmedical methods, the state of Minnesota has a several small and big community groups that are helping people to overcome their abuse problems. These community groups are mostly all-encompassing groups and they are not just aimed for drug and alcohol abuse in Minnesota. Apart from the issue of drug and alcohol abuse in Minnesota, they also deal with eating disorders, mental disorders, pornographic addiction, gambling addiction and several other such points that come in the way of proper social living.

These groups are not quite preachy as one would assume. Instead of dealing with a lot of sermonizing and such, the groups are more about peer group counseling. People in similar situations speak about their issues and encourage others on finding remedial options. This principle may seem quite similar to that of the Alcoholics Anonymous and indeed, there is a spiritual or religious touch to most of these programs, and they also recommend people to the Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous and other such groups.

For people who are with mild problems of alcoholism and substance abuse in Minnesota, these programs are truly quite beneficial to help them in coming out of their problems. They are usually advertised in churches and local publications when they are going to be conducted. There are also dinners included with the programs, which are different for large groups of people and smaller groups of people. Though not a persistent method of treatment, these kinds of community groups help people battling common afflictions to come together and fight together.
