However, there is a lot of controversy regarding the effectiveness of using this medication. A recent trial has discovered that the drug company that manufactures Prometa, Hythiam Inc., greatly exaggerated how well it works for addicts.Prometa was first used in the treatment of cocaine and crystal meth addiction in 2003. Some experts at that time claimed it was practically a miracle drug that worked wonders for helping people in recovery. However, the actual proof that this is true is sorely lacking. There is no scientific evidence yet of Prometa’s great success rates. It also did not need to be approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use in addiction treatment because of a sort of loophole in the regulations. The company claims that doctors and rehab patients believe it works, yet the methods they used in their testing of the drug were hardly scientific. For example, they did not count individuals who had dropped out of the program in their statistics.

There are a number of effective medications that are currently being used in addiction treatment, but the jury is still out on whether Prometa is one of them. This debate has been going on since the drug was initially released.
