Helping Someone Enter a Treatment Program

When you have a family member or friend with drug or alcohol abuse, it can be nearly as painful as if it were your own suffering. It can be so hard to watch your loved one go through this experience.
Substance abuse can be very tricky to solve – everyone is an individual and treating substance abuse is not a “cookie cutter” solution. People need individual solutions. Many with drug or alcohol abuse problems decide to enter treatment programs. There are many ways you can help support your loved one while they are in a treatment program.Be Positive. Everyone progresses at a different rate and sometimes progress may come quickly and other times it may come slowly. Having family and friends who are positive and enthusiastic about your progress is so valuable. It really helps someone in a treatment program to have family and friends they know are really in their corner, cheering them on all the way. Somehow when you have love – all things seem possible.
Visit and Call. Treatment programs are different and with some you may not be able to visit or call all the time. It is important to respect the rules of the treatment program. But visiting and calling when the patient is able to accept visitors and calls is so helpful. Simply connecting with those that love you can remind them of why they are doing this. It can give them that extra motivation, that extra push they need to improve and really go the distance.
These may seem like very simple things, but to someone in a treatment program they are so valuable. Having visitors and people that care about you is critical to the treatment process. People that go through the treatment process do a lot of hard work to improve their lives. It is so helpful to have others there that love them and want to be a part of their lives.
