When you first get to an addiction treatment center, you probably won’t be sure where to begin. You will be anxious about the road that lies ahead, and you won’t know exactly what to expect.

You are in a new environment with strangers and probably lacking confidence in your ability to succeed. On top of this, you are probably beginning to experience withdrawal symptoms, making you feel sick and have strong cravings for drugs or alcohol. In short, the beginning of addiction treatment is not exactly a fun or uplifting process. However, many people have successfully gone through detox and a rehab program, and you can too. The key for surviving the first few days, as well as all of addiction recovery, is taking it one step at a time. In the beginning, this may very well mean looking at one minute at a time rather than a whole day at a time. Tell yourself that you just have to make it through the next minute. Then, you can move on to dealing with hours and bigger chunks of time. After the first two weeks, most of the cravings will be gone, and sobriety will become much easier. Focus on the reasons why you want to beat drug addiction and alcoholism, as these things will provide your motivation to stick with it. They may include your children or other family members, your chance for a fulfilling life, and developing a successful career.

Having an idea of what to expect can also make the process easier. Don’t be afraid to ask questions during and after addiction treatment. Also, do everything you can to have a positive attitude. Focusing on everything you dislike about your situation will not help you in any way. It will only make your situation worse. Instead, take advantage of the opportunities that are in front of you.
