Compared with other states, the prevalence of drug addiction in New Mexico seems to be low. Statistics show that less than 6,000 people seek treatment in some rehab center in New Mexico each year. Compared with the population of close to two million people within the state, this number seems to be quite small, taken together with the other state figures. But even within this small number of people, the number of people who use methamphetamine and crystal meth in New Mexico is highly significant.

Methamphetamine and crystal meth are today on the top position for drug abuse in New Mexico. They have easily superseded other popular drugs such as heroin, cocaine and marijuana and achieved top status here. New Mexico is one state where methamphetamine is seized in quantities that go to several kilograms. These are mostly seized over the state borders and the various highway interdiction spots. The major areas from where the influx of methamphetamine takes place in New Mexico are from Phoenix in Arizona and Los Angeles in California. In addition, there are reports of methamphetamine coming in from Colorado and Utah also.

Something that makes the problem more serious is the prevalence of the various small labs in the state which clandestinely product methamphetamine and its purer version, crystal meth. There are several such meth labs strewn across the state even though most of these have been cracked down upon by the authorities in the recent past. These labs use common everyday materials to produce a very strong variety of meth, known as crystal meth. Both methamphetamine and crystal meth addiction in New Mexico are most prevalent in the youth nightclub and rave party circuit of the state.
